Bangkok uncovered: temples, markets and food
Bangkok brings together temples, markets, food and busy streets. Give yourself time to explore one area at a time, with room for a meal, a riverside pause and the unexpected discoveries along the way.
Temples and the river
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho’s reclining Buddha, Wat Arun and Wat Saket each offer a different view of Bangkok’s heritage. Pick a few places rather than rushing to see them all. Before visiting the Grand Palace, check its official calendar and dress requirements: sleeveless, short, torn, tight or see-through clothing can prevent admission.

Taste your way around the city
Pad kra pao combines holy basil with a savoury stir-fry. Som tam is a green papaya salad; Pad Thai brings together sweet, sour and savoury flavours. Jok, rice porridge often served with pork, egg and ginger, makes a comforting breakfast. Mango with sticky rice is a favourite way to finish a meal.

Markets with different personalities
Choose a market to suit your interests, from the range of stalls at Chatuchak to the flowers at Pak Khlong Talat. Check the market’s current trading days and location before setting out, particularly for evening markets. Leave room in your bags if you plan to shop.

Getting around
Allow time for traffic between stops. If taking a tuk-tuk, agree the fare before leaving. Keep your hotel’s full address handy and choose an airport pickup from BKK or DMK to match your actual arrival ticket.
